PhD Student

PhD Candidate (ref. OTEC/05017)

This new position is related to a new project funded by the European Commission (MACE). The position is for a three year period.

We are looking for ambitious, smart and motivated people who want to work in an international, multidisciplinary team. They will research and develop a new open-source and standards-based ICT infrastructure, aimed to support formal and informal lifelong learning of individuals, groups and organisations in Europe. Access to Learning Content with new forms of interfaces based on metadata and social software approaches.

The candidate is expected to carry out research and development work on the following topics:

1. New interfaces for access to support learning in the domain of architecture and design.
2. Personalized competence development support
3. Learning Design (IMS LD) for personalized access to learning contents and communities
4. Applying Game Design Approaches to the design of communities of practice and learning networks.

Job requirements

In a highly interdisciplinary environment, the candidates will collaborate with learning technologists, computer scientists, psychologists, and experts in the specific pilot domains. We are looking for candidates from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds - such as computer science, educational technology, knowledge technologists, learning and cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, computer linguistics - both to extend and complement the present expertise.

The PhD-candidates should:

• have completed (or are about to complete) a masters degree at a university in one of the relevant disciplines
• be able to demonstrate their interest in research and technology development
• be fluent in English, both in speech and writing
• have modelling, scripting and programming skills

Station
Heerlen. It is in principle possible to work some time in research labs of 9 other European countries in the context of the PhD-students exchange plan.

Salary
PhD-candidates salary conform VSNU standards: € 1877,-
